Blood Pressure refers to the pressure exerted by the blood on the arterial walls when the heart beats (contracts and then relaxes, also known as a Cardiac Cycle).
It is broken down into two measurements; Systolic and Diastolic.
Systolic: The higher of the two measurements and refers to the pressure of the blood on the arterial walls when it is pumped out of the heart.
Diastolic: The lowest pressure reached as the heart muscles relax and refill with blood between beats.
Too high (Hypertension) and you risk developing a long-term illness or heart disease. Too low (Hypotension) can lead to dizziness and other side-affects.
Check regularly and consult a medical professional if your readings are continually outside health range.
Blood Pressure Classifications, as per NHS
Healthy Range: 120/80 – 90/60
